Bruno Mars

Peter Gene Hernandez, known professionally as Bruno Mars, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, and showman whose retro-infused pop, funk, and R&B have dominated charts and award shows for over a decade. He was born on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a musically inclined family: his father, Pete, was a Latin percussionist of Puerto Rican and Jewish descent, and his mother, Bernadette, was a Filipino singer and dancer.(Wikipedia)

Growing up in Waikiki, Mars performed from a young age in his family’s showband, impersonating Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson and absorbing influences ranging from doo-wop and Motown to reggae and rock. He moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue music, initially working behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer with the team The Smeezingtons. He co-wrote hits like Flo Rida’s “Right Round” and B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You,” the latter also featuring his own vocals.(Wikipedia)

As a solo artist, Mars broke through with his 2010 debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which included “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” and “The Lazy Song.” His smooth tenor and throwback songwriting quickly made him a pop staple. The follow-up album Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) showcased his range, weaving rock, soul, and reggae into hits like “Locked Out of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man.”(Encyclopedia Britannica)

In 2014, Mars delivered a widely praised Super Bowl halftime performance, reinforcing his reputation as an elite live act with tight choreography and a horn-driven band, the Hooligans. He then shifted into even more overtly funk and R&B territory with 24K Magic (2016). Fueled by the singles “24K Magic” and “That’s What I Like,” plus the Mark Ronson collaboration “Uptown Funk,” the era’s sound and visuals channelled 1980s and ’90s party R&B while feeling freshly contemporary. 24K Magic won the Grammy for Album of the Year, among several others.(Encyclopedia Britannica)

In 2021, Mars teamed up with Anderson .Paak to form Silk Sonic. Their album An Evening with Silk Sonic delivered lush, 1970s-style soul and R&B; the lead single “Leave the Door Open” became a massive hit and swept major Grammy categories for R&B.(Wikipedia)

Mars is lauded for his meticulous musicianship—he plays multiple instruments—and his old-school stagecraft. His concerts are choreographed but loose, driven by live instrumentation rather than backing tracks. In a pop landscape often dominated by digital minimalism, he’s one of the key figures keeping high-energy, band-centered performance at the center of mainstream entertainment.
